                                                                   Key West

Key West is located about 150 miles away from Miami and 90 miles away from Hawana. It is a treasure trove, and not just because of the multitude of shipwreck artifacts and memorabilia. Its Old Town section is rich with historic sites and architecture. Because the island is so compact, many vulnerable houses and other buildings now function as inns, restaurants, and museums.

At the southern most point of the United States, this colorful Florida island prides itself on having a sense of fun and a truly independent spirit. In the 1970’s Key West protested federal policy by “seceding” from the Unioun and declaring  itself the sovereign “ Conch Republic “. It’s that quirky, tongue-in-cheek take on life that has attracted a multitude of artists, musicians and writers to Key West – along with Key lime pie and killer sunsets.

Places of Interest  : A good way to start exploring Key West is with a trolley train tour. A narrated tour of Old Town is peppered with legend, lore and anecdotes as you take in all the sights.Papa Hemingway’s home is a central attraction. The two-story, Spanish-colonial house is now a museum that offers guided tours everyday. Hemingway loved cats, and  dozens of them still roam the property, including many that are descendants of the original Hemingway cats. Knowing Hemingway’s fondness for felines, Pablo Picasso sculpted a ceramic cat and gave it to him. A replica of the sculpture remains in the home today.Other notable sites include the Wreckers Museum; the Harry  S. Truman Little White House Museum, which ewas the winter White House during the Truman administration; and the Key West Aquarium, where you can pet baby sharks and view a wide range of tropical fish and shellfish. Here you’ll find historic Fort Jefferson, where Dr. Samuel Mudd was imprisoned after treating John Wikes Booth, who assassinated Abraham Lincoln. The Dry Tortugas also provide a home to hundreds of species of tropical birds. The best place to begin a lively evening on the town is at Mallory Square at sunset.
